Gavi, Kudakwashe

Kudakwashe was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, he has three brothers. As a child he was always interested in drawing cartoons. At school, one of his teachers persuaded him to join the art club, where he had a teacher who instilled the love of art in him. He then went on to do art as a subject at high school. After school he joined a community art school for 18 months.

He had an exhibition with VAAB (The visual artists association of Bulawayo). He was selected from this to be given an artists studio for 3 months with materials. This really gave his career a good start. He often did political paintings to reflect what was going on in his country. It was during the time of Mugabe’s “clean up” and he was often intimidated.

He decided to come to South Africa, where the first 4 ½ years were tough, it was hard to earn a living out of his art. He also did volunteer work in the community in which he lived. Over the last few years he has experimented with various materials, done murals which enabled him to use the left over paints and the discovery of his use of the palette knife has given him his distinctive style.

His subject matter is always “looking at life in a positive way”. He tries to capture this “every day life” with simple scenes, although there is always a little twist in the story. His colour choices are strong and he always paints on a black surface as he believes this has an effect of changing the colour.

He is now consistently supplying a few upmarket galleries in the Western Cape and is definitely a name to watch out for.
